Michaël Laterveer - Blue Linked
About this Talk (in English): Michaël Laterveer is a pioneer in circular fish farming on land with unique, innovative techniques. His approach is inspired by nature, by growing a naturally functioning marine ecosystem in a closed cultivation system in which marine organisms can express their natural behaviour. He talks about his search for solutions to the increasing demand for high quality protein sources by a growing world population. And how he arrived at his circular fish farming methods, with which he also gives something back to nature. Besides farming for consumption, his bio-inspired approach is also suitable for releasing fish (or other marine life) for nature conservation purposes and to improve biodiversity. The motto of his company Blue Linked is therefore: 'one fish on your plate, one fish in the sea'. About Michaël: Blue Linked, a research and consultancy and management agency in the area of the marine environment, was founded in 2011 by Michaël Laterveer (1963). Before that, Michaël worked for more than 15 years as a marine biologist in Diergaarde Blijdorp (Rotterdam), where he was closely involved in the design and construction of the Oceanium. As a curator, manager and professional diver, Michaël was responsible for, among other things, the daily management of a team of animal handlers, lab technicians, divers, technicians, students and volunteers. He was also founder of the marine laboratory of the Oceanium, where marine organisms are cultivated and scientific research takes place. Michaël also formed the basis of the public laboratory, where visitors are given a look at the cultivation activities and the research. Currently, Michaël is leading the consulting and strategic development of marine projects focused on the preservation and sustainable use of the world’s oceanic resources. |
